This is the shawl that got me to try knitting shawls. I didn’t really understand the hype until I found this pattern. It’s Daybreak by Stephen West.

I thought I was being so original with my colour choices, the heather-purples and oatmeal-brown…

IMG_9936but I’m obviously far more suggestible than I realised as they are in fact almost identical to the colours of the original shawl in the pattern! Never mind. I still love them.

I was knitting along quite happily for the first half of the striped section, thinking congratulatory thoughts to myself for starting a shawl and knitting it so quickly and not screwing up the pattern.

And then I screwed up the pattern.

IMG_0193I managed to drop a stitch while I was talking to someone, and I thought I had rescued it, but I obviously put my stitch markers back in the wrong place and the nice graphic line of slipped stitches became very jagged in one section. When I saw it I decided to go back to the original placing for the slipped stitches rather than rip out the mistake, hoping that duplicate stitch and chain stitch would sort out the mistaken bits instead. It worked! It’s not quite as perfect as the one below but it’s close.

IMG_0194This is going to be a firm favourite come winter when I am ferrying school children from classroom to hall to field and back again.
